چکیده

Transverse to longitudinal phase space manipulation hold great promises, e.g., as a potential technique for repartitioning the emittances of a beam. A proof-of-principle experiment to demonstrate the exchange of a low longitudinal emittance with a larger transverse emittance is in preparation at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator using a ∼ 12 MeV electron beam. In this paper we explore the limiting effects of this phase space manipulation method including high order and collective effects. A realistic startto-end simulation of the planned proof-of-principle experiment including sensitivity studies is also presented.

Transverse-to-longitudinal emittance exchange to improve performance of high-gain free-electron lasers

The ability to generate small transverse emittance is perhaps the main limiting factor for the performance of high-gain x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs). Noting that beams from an rf photocathode gun can have energy spread much smaller than required for efficient FEL interaction, we present a method to produce normalized transverse emittance at or below about 0:1 m, which will lead to a signif...

Transverse to Longitudinal Emittance Exchange*

A scheme is proposed to exchange the transverse and longitudinal emittances of an electron bunch. A general analysis is presented and a specific beamline is used as an example where the emittance exchange is achieved by placing a transverse deflecting mode radio-frequency cavity in a magnetic chicane. In addition to reducing the transverse emittance, the bunch length is also simultaneously comp...

Laser assisted emittance transfer for storage ring lasing

In modern storage rings the transverse emittance of electron beams can be comparable to that from state-of-art photoinjectors, but the intrinsic low peak current and large energy spread precludes the possibility of realizing short-wavelength high-gain free electron lasers (FELs) in storage rings. In this note I propose a technique to significantly increase beam peak current without greatly incr...

Alternative lattice options for energy recovery in high-average-power high-efficiency free-electron lasers

High-average-power free-electron lasers often rely on energy-recovering linacs. In a high-efficiency free electron laser, the main limitation to high average power stems from the fractional energy spread induced by the free-electron laser process. Managing beams with large fractional energy spread while simultaneously avoiding beam losses is extremely challenging and relies on intricate longitu...

Helical Channels for Longitudinal Compression of Muon Beams

Transverse cooling of muon beams can be achieved through ionization cooling. However, longitudinal emittance growth occurs as a by-product of this method; at the muon energy of choice, low energy muons suffer enhanced energy loss. Even a small amount of longitudinal cooling would be advantageous for a neutrino factory, while longitudinal cooling by a factor of 100 is required for a muon collide...
